Review: David Protein Expands Into Frozen Desserts

David Protein’s frozen dessert line includes four SKUs – Vanilla Bean, Cookie Dough, Triple Chocolate and Triple Peanut Butter – each delivering 30 grams of protein, 260 calories, and 2 grams of sugar per 16 oz. pint. Positioned around the claim of “the most protein for the fewest calories,” with 46% of calories from protein, the products do a truly impressive job of delivering an indulgent, ice cream-like experience while maintaining a remarkably lean nutrition panel. The overall execution, flavor quality, and strong packaging make this a compelling entry in the protein dessert space that feels especially innovative for the David brand.
Things that stand out:
- The nutrition profile is the clear headline. The protein/calorie/sugar content are almost hard to believe considering the taste of the product. It’s another great showcase for the proprietary fat replacer EPG and builds on what the brand created with its bar lineup.
- The products taste surprisingly indulgent given the macros, with a creamy, dessert-like experience that comes closer to full-calorie ice cream than we expected. Also, David appears to have customized the sweetener systems by SKU, using combinations of allulose, sucralose, monk fruit, and stevia depending on the flavor. That SKU-specific approach likely helps optimize each flavor rather than forcing the same sweetener system across the line.
- Flavor execution is really strong. This starts with the straightforward flavor of the Vanilla Bean variety and continues through the more indulgent flavors. We really enjoyed the Triple Chocolate (complete with chocolate chips and chocolate ribbons) and the Cookie Dough, but the Triple Peanut Butter was, at least for our palates, the standout. We loved the intense peanut butter flavor and light salty finish that make it the most craveable of the four.
- The gold pint has strong shelf presence and is unmistakably part of the David brand system, while the front-of-pack functional stack does a good job of communicating the product’s core benefits quickly.
- The ingredient list is unusually transparent and consumer-friendly, with ingredients grouped into systems such as protein, structure, fat, and flavor. This helps explain the formulation in a way that feels more intentional and easier to understand than a conventional ingredient deck.
- Relative to David’s bars, this feels like a more innovative extension of the brand into a new format. We also personally preferred the eating experience here, without that taking anything away from the bars.
Things to consider:
- There’s a little of an aftertaste, most likely from the high-intensity sweetener system. That said, it is not severe enough to undermine repeat purchase intent, especially given the very low sugar content and protein content. It feels like a fine tradeoff, but refining this further would be good.
- EPG may require some consumer education, especially for shoppers who are unfamiliar with novel fat alternatives. However, David’s segmented ingredient list and functional framing help make the formulation feel more transparent rather than mysterious.
