Private equity firm Axum Capital Partners says it is looking to double down on health and wellness food companies with the announcement of its latest fund, targeting $300 million in committed capital.

The Charlotte, N.C. based firm recently invested on the restaurant side of the food and beverage sector with Le Botaniste, an organic, plant-based on-premise concept, and now in a press release it says it wants to go deeper into the space with new investments in ingredients, CPG and foodservice.

“Our food choices are fundamental—and today’s consumers want healthier, better-for-you options,” said managing partner Muhsin Muhammad II in the release. “This is where Axum thrives. We not only live this lifestyle, but we’ve also been investing in this space for years, and our expertise and relationships give us a clear advantage in building the next generation of leading brands.”

With the fresh fund, two new names have also joined the firm as general partners: former Wells Fargo Securities managing director Lance Johnson and retired NBA player Derrick Brown, who previously co-founded investment firm Free Fenix.

Others getting involved include Ezra Field, a 14-year veteran of food and beverage PE firm Roark Capital, who is now serving as an advisor, while former GNC CEO Josh Burris has come on board as an operating partner. Additionally, Lynn Girts was named as CFO.

“As a firm, we believe strongly in the importance of relationships, both internally and externally,” Muhammad added. “This team came together organically through trusted relationships built over many years. We are united by shared values — teamwork, excellence, accountability, resilience — and by a passion for helping entrepreneurs scale mission-driven businesses.”

The addition of Brown also signals a deeper interest in the sports space, and the firm has a strategic partnership with creative firm 7K, which was founded by current Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, and with Acuity Partners, a private markets strategic advisory firm.

“We’re incredibly excited about what’s ahead and believe our unique platform will provide access to exclusive investment opportunities,” Muhammad said. “Our mission is simple: partner with visionary entrepreneurs to grow exceptional brands and deliver meaningful value for all stakeholders.”
