Atlantic Sea Farms Launches Two New Sea-Veggie Burgers

BIDDEFORD, Maine— In its continuing effort to boost local coastal economies and improve ocean health through regenerative kelp farming, Atlantic Sea Farms—the award-winning, women-run, American leader in seaweed aquaculture— demonstrates continued product development prowess with the launch of two new Sea-Veggie Burgers for grocery retail.

A first look at these new plant-based burgers made with regeneratively-grown kelp is happening this week at Natural Products Expo East 2022 in Philadelphia, where attendees can get a taste at Atlantic Sea Farms booth #4076 in the Hot Products Hall.

Following on the heels of its food service launch, the new retail products are available now to U.S.-based grocery buyers and distributors.

Offered in two varieties, ’Basil Pesto’ (a NEXTY award winner for ‘Best New Product Supporting a Plant-Based Lifestyle’) and ‘Ginger Sesame’, these Sea-Veggie Burgers deliver savory satisfaction on a bun, but that’s not all. Also brilliant as meal starters, they bring great tasting, nutrient-dense umami to vegan grain bowls, tacos, stir fries, breakfast hash and more. Quick and easy to prepare, they cook from frozen in less than 15 minutes.

Made with whole, plant-based ingredients that are easy to pronounce, including kelp and green chickpeas as the two lead ingredients, both burger varieties score a nutritional Grand Slam. A hearty source of plant-based protein, green chickpeas are also high in fiber, B vitamins (including folate), iron and more. Kelp, one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, includes naturally high levels of iodine, antioxidants, potassium, iron and folic acid. It also boasts the highest natural concentration of calcium of any food. Additional ingredients, namely pea protein, oat fiber, chickpea flour and nutritional yeast, further boost nutritional value.

“Our kelp and green chickpeas are regeneratively grown, putting a totally new plant-based, climate action spin on the term, “surf and turf”, notes Atlantic Sea Farms Chief Marketing Officer, Jesse Baines. “Furthermore, this is the first product of its kind that is designed to taste like a kelp-based veggie burger rather than a plant-based meat.”

Ginger, garlic and toasted sesame seeds bring warm, nutty notes to the Ginger Sesame Sea-Veggie Burgers, while basil, lemon and a touch of red pepper flakes give the Basil Pesto variety a green, summery vibe.

Atlantic Sea Farms ’Basil Pesto’ and ‘Ginger Sesame’ Sea-Veggie Burgers are Non-GMO Project Verified, naturally gluten-free and vegan, Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested, and made with kelp that is regeneratively grown and hand harvested in the clean cold waters of Maine.

According to a Global Market Insights Report, the commercial seaweed market is projected to reach $85 billion by 2026. “Our new Sea-Veggie Burgers amplify the principles that drive Atlantic Sea Farms’ entire product line of award-winning, responsibly-made kelp products. They include the same delicious, nutrient dense, fresh kelp – line-grown by our partner fishermen farmers in Maine’s clean, cold waters – that we use in everything we make,” Atlantic Sea Farms CEO Briana Warner says. “As a result, these climate action products help support local farms and ocean health, all while giving you a delicious, climate-friendly, plant-based, superfood boost. They speak to our mantra, ‘good food should do good’”

Atlantic Sea Farms’ domestically cultivated kelp is a climate hero. Carbon negative and hyper-efficient, it’s a regenerative, zero-input aquaculture crop that requires no fertilizer, pesticides, feeds, arable land or fresh water. In just four seasons since the company’s first kelp harvest, Atlantic Sea Farms partner farms have removed more than 225,000 pounds of carbon from local Maine waters, while supporting partner fisherman farmers. “Every product that we get into the hands of consumers helps us improve the world we are living in – and we are incredibly proud of what we’ve built,” Warner says.

The award-winning, mission driven, women-run, first-to-market regenerative kelp aquaculture company, which partners with independent Maine coast fishermen to grow kelp in pristine, domestic waters, has garnered a reputation for innovation and bringing healthy and delicious products to the market while making it easy for consumers to incorporate kelp into their daily diets. The Sea-Veggie Burgers build on Atlantic Sea Farms’ continued knock-out success, joining the company’s existing suite of award-winning fresh-frozen and fermented kelp products, which have been lauded by the Good Food Foundation, Specialty Food Association, NEXTY and others.

Atlantic Sea Farms suggested retail prices are as follows: ’Basil Pesto’ and ‘Ginger Sesame’ Sea-Veggie Burgers, $7.99; Wild Blueberry & Ginger Kelp Cubes, $7.99; Cranberry Kelp Cubes; $7.99, Original Kelp Cubes, $7.99, 12-ounce Ready-Cut Kelp, $8.99; and 15-ounce jarred Sea-Chi, Sea Beet Salad, and Fermented Seaweed Salad, $8.99. All products are gluten-free, non-GMO, and free of artificial ingredients. Atlantic Sea Farms kelp products have national distribution with broadline distributors as well as local independents, and can be found on shelf at Sprouts Farmers Market, Whole Foods, specialty and seafood markets, food co-ops, and large-scale grocery outlets, including Hannaford and select Wegmans.
