Review: Fly By Jing Offers Saucy, Spicy Take on Instant Noodles

Authentic Chinese sauces and spice maker Fly By Jing launched its instant noodles in 2024, starting with Sweet & Spicy and Chili Crisp varieties before expanding into milder options with Classic Soy, Creamy Sesame and Roasted Garlic. Each 3.7 oz. package (six per box) can be cooked in six minutes, contains 12 grams of protein, and is vegan and GMO-free.
Things that stand out:
- Fly By Jing may have made its name with sauces, but its Sichuan-style noodles are the star here. Thick-cut, wavy and satisfyingly chewy noodles are fairly unique in the instant category, making this a more satisfying and satiating meal than a typical ramen.
- The five flavors provide a wide assortment of tastes, with the three mild varieties, Classic Soy, Creamy Sesame and Roasted Garlic, standing out as more approachable and a positive expansion into the noodle category.
- The premium, authentic approach leaves ample room to expand into different flavors and sauce combinations.
Things to consider:
- Having made a name for itself as a chili crisp condiment brand, Fly By Jing’s Sweet & Spicy and Chili Crisp varieties are not for the faint-hearted. Currently, the brand uses a five-chili icon on the package to delineate heat level. While helpful, the infograph undersells the spiciness of some of the varieties for consumers more sensitive to chilis.
- The sauce-to-noodle ratio is a little off. The brand should either reduce the amount of sauce or add more noodles to bring them into proportion.
- Proportionally, each 3.7 oz. packet is single-serve but isn’t a full meal. Unless supplemented with sautéed vegetables or a protein like chicken, meat or tofu, consider a noodle kit as a snack.
