Inside Walmart’s New Marketplace Capabilities

In what is likely its latest effort to compete with Amazon, Walmart this week introduced new tools and seller incentives for Walmart Marketplace, its ecommerce platform that connects third-party sellers to its customer base.

These updates include:

  • An AI-powered listing tool that helps sellers reduce time to market and increase conversion rates
  • A brand portal that flags fraudulent activity with a focus on product authenticity
  • Next day shipping to major metros like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston and Atlanta, through Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS)
  • Access to reach customers across multiple marketplaces, including the U.S., Mexico and Chile

Perhaps most notably, Walmart is expanding its omnichannel presence through in-store digital discovery. At its Cypress, Texas, location, consumers can scan QR codes throughout the store to shop an extended online assortment. Additionally, several items from Walmart Marketplace will be on display at the store.

Why it matters: While the approach isn’t entirely unique – Best Buy and Amazon have also explored “extended aisle” concepts with QR codes – Walmart has a leg up with 4,500 high-traffic stores, according to global business strategy consultant Brittain Ladd. If rolled out chainwide, he believes “this could be a genuine edge by bridging trust in physical stores with digital assortment.”

But are these Marketplace updates enough to help Walmart maintain its leadership in an age where a strong omnichannel presence has become table stakes? Not necessarily.

“[The new tools] help close gaps by simplifying seller onboarding, improving fulfillment and enhancing brand control. But they aren’t enough to outpace Amazon, which is already building deeper ecosystems in AI, logistics and retail media. Walmart is playing defense, not offense,” Ladd told Nosh.

What else can Walmart do to stay competitive? According to Ladd, the retail chain must invest in AI-driven logistics and automation, expand Walmart+ “into a true Prime competitor,” grow Walmart Connect (retail media) and leverage its stores as digital-physical fulfillment hubs.
