Spring refreshes are in, and this is a combination you would never want to mix together. Here’s a look at two big image updates including one legacy Asian food player’s consumer awareness efforts and an entrepreneurial yogurt startup’s move to avoid growing confusion.

Beny Yogurt Goes For Sourmilk

New York-based startup probiotic yogurt maker Beny has changed its name to Sourmilk after recognizing that a startup energy drink by the name of “Benny,” which debuted in 2023, could create consumer confusion if both companies eventually scale up to national status.

“Sourmilk checked all those boxes,” said Beny Yogurt co-founder Elan Halpern in a recent LinkedIn post. “Yes, ‘sour milk’ usually makes people pause, but that reaction is what makes it memorable. Sour milk doesn’t mean spoiled milk. Think about it this way, if sour cream is fermented cream, and yogurt is fermented milk, doesn’t that make yogurt sour milk?”

The company is still “pre-launch,” but is readying to launch a single SKU-line of fermented plain yogurt that boasts it provides a “daily probiotic supplement in yogurt form.”

According to Halpern, the team homed in on a new name that would be easy to pronounce, memorable and educational. That eventually led them to Sourmilk, which she believes will help the brand both “grab consumer attention” while also effectively telling the story “about what the product is.”

Buldak Refreshes Sauce Packs

South Korean ramen giant Samyang’s Buldak brand unveiled a new packaging design for its 3-SKU line of hot sauces this week, adopting a bright color palette and QR code to connect consumers to the company’s website and raise awareness for its broader product assortment, it said in a press release.

“Buldak has always been flavorful and fearless, and our refreshed packaging captures that same spirit – modern, eye-catching, and made for today’s fans,” said Youngsik Shin, CEO of Samyang America, in a press release. “With the addition of our QR code integration, we’re making it easier than ever for consumers to enjoy and engage with the brand they love, anytime, anywhere.”

The products also come in a 50-piece Sauce Stick format with both the 7.05 oz bottles and stick packs retailing for $5.49. In addition to the new look, the brand is rolling out new Buldak Potato Chips in Original, Habanero Lime and Quattro Cheese flavors, which will retail for $3.99 per 4.23 oz. bag. All three products will be rolling out to H-E-B, Kroger, Meijer and Target, among others, this spring.

Earlier this year, the company also made its Coachella debut with a hot sauce tasting pop-up activation with an appearance and support from festival performer and Grammy-nominated artist GloRilla.
