Boston-based air-popped water lily seed snack maker Bohana has been acquired by Vimal Kansara of Dallas, Texas-based Boon Distribution, according to an email the brand sent to NOSH last week. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Popped water lily seeds, a traditional Indian snack, gained traction stateside over the past few years with the emergence of brands such as Bohana, Asha Pops, Taali and Swaha. The snacks are often touted as a better-for-you alternative to popcorn, as they have fewer calories and more protein.

Launched in 2018 by Priyal Bhartia and Nadine Habayeb, Bohana offers its popped water lily seed snacks in four flavors: Wild White Cheddar, Himalayan Pink Sea Salt, Hickory Barbeque and Zesty Ranch. The puffs retail for $29.99 per 6-pack of 2 oz. bags.

Bohana’s products are available direct-to-consumer nationwide through the brand’s website and on Amazon and at select retailers in Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

“We are confident that with Bohana’s new owner’s infrastructure, they will continue to build on everything we have achieved so far, and carry out our mission of bringing water lily seeds to the world,” said Habayeb in the original email.

Bohana joins Boon Distribution’s portfolio of multicultural brands that also includes Saffron Road, Sukhi’s Parliament and Chandan among others. According to the distributor’s site, it provides CPG brands with grocery and foodservice solutions for c-stores, caterers and restaurants in the ethnic South Asian market.

Bohana declined to further comment on the acquisition. Boon Distribution could not be reached for comment by the time of publication.
