Daily Harvest is asking consumers to dispose of its recently launched alternative meat product after multiple reports that it is causing severe gastrointestinal issues. The D2C frozen food brand, announced on Sunday that it was aware of the issues.

The product is French Lentil + Leek Crumbles, which launched at the end of April and also comes in a Walnut + Thyme variety. That SKU has not been linked to any reports of illness.

“We took immediate steps to address what we heard from customers, reaching out to every person who received French Lentil + Leek Crumbles, instructing them to dispose of the product and not eat it,” said the company in a statement. “We simultaneously launched an investigation with internal and external experts throughout our supply chain and in accordance with regulatory procedures. We will share more information as soon as it’s available.”

“Our mission has always been to take care of food so food can take care of you. That means quality, safety, and transparency are and always will be our top priorities. If you have any French Lentil + Leek Crumbles, please dispose of them and do not eat them.”

The crumbles are made with a base of legumes, nuts and vegetables and contain 13 grams of protein and between 5-7 grams of fiber per serving. Neither product contains pea or soy proteins which are commonly used ingredients in alternative meat products.

While the source of the issue remains unclear, the brand’s extensive social media influencer network has also been working to alert consumers with at least one influencer issuing an apology for promoting the product and potentially causing her followers to get sick.

“I have been ordering from Daily Harvest for quite some time and have always had a great experience with their food,” said Ilana Wiles (@mommyshorts) in a statement on Instagram. “I apologize if my promotion resulted in anyone getting sick and definitely if you have the crumbles in your fridge, don’t eat them and contact the company.”

Daily Harvest declined to answer questions on this story, referring to its previous statement.

Consumers, however, have not been quiet about their experiences online. Multiple users on Reddit detailed symptoms ranging from extreme nausea and vomiting to stomach pains warranting emergency room visits. At least two consumers claim the crumbles caused liver damage that led to multiple days in the hospital.
