The global research firm believes that in 2016 “fat” will no longer be a dirty word, and even be seen as a way to shed excess pounds. For years consumers have believed low-fat was the key to staying trim, but the newer belief is that healthy fats (such as avocado based products, olive oils, anchovies and nuts) are key to a balanced diet. This product category’s rise ties into Mintel’s other trend of “diet by DNA” — a belief that diet should focus on “age old products” and reflect more of what our ancestors ate. Cavemen, steel workers and pilgrims were far more likely to consume fats then highly processed products. Will 2016 see the rise of products proclaiming “healthy fats” instead of “low fat”?
