AKUA Teams Up With Nickelodeon To Launch Kid-Friendly SpongeBob SquarePants Kelp Patties

Cotuit, MA – AKUA announces a groundbreaking partnership with none other than Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants to introduce two kid-friendly variations of their best-selling product, The World’s First Kelp Burger. The slider-size renditions, aptly named Kelp Patties, will be available in original and BBQ flavors, and will soon grace the shelves of retail stores and the menus of restaurants nationwide. The Kelp Patties are expected to hit the market as early as this July.

The AKUA and SpongeBob SquarePants collaboration was a natural extension of Operation Sea Change, Nickelodeon’s recently launched global ocean conservation and sustainability initiative. It represents a well-tuned alignment of values, combining AKUA’s commitment to providing sustainable and nutritious plant-based alternatives with SpongeBob’s ocean-based popularity among children and families. By incorporating the spirit of fun and adventure that SpongeBob embodies, AKUA aims to make eco-friendly eating more accessible and appealing to younger generations.

As noted by AKUA founder and new mom, Courtney Boyd Myers, “I could not be prouder of our new products coming to market this month. AKUA’s Kelp Patties offer a delicious and nutritious option for kids while staying true to AKUA’s mission of creating great-tasting and planet-friendly food choices. Crafted from 100% sustainable ocean-farmed kelp, these kid-friendly patties are not only tasty but also contribute to improving the health of little humans and the health of our vast oceans.”

AKUA is a woman-owned, women-led company with the goal of reducing factory farming — the most destructive form of food agriculture on the planet — with the multiple benefits of regenerative ocean farming. Founded in 2017, AKUA is the pioneer of ocean-farmed, kelp-based products. Their 2023 partnership with Nickelodeon’s beloved SpongeBob SquarePants character, and the new varieties of Kelp Patties, represent a new chapter in the company’s mission to create sustainable, healthy alternatives to existing meat and highly-processed meat alternatives.

AKUA is proud to source the majority of its ingredients from local US supply chains (with the exception of their delicious extra virgin olive oil from Greece!). But unlike 99% of the seaweed on the market today that is imported from Asia, AKUA sources its kelp from a network of ocean farmers along the pristine waters of the New England seaboard. Uniquely, kelp requires no fresh water, no fertilizer, no feed, no pesticides, and no arable land to grow, making it a powerful – and essential – future food. AKUA is also being widely heralded for popularizing kelp, a sea-based super(food) solution to climate change because, as the kelp photosynthesizes, it sequesters harmful C02 and nitrogen from the seas.

The new SpongeBob Kelp Patties will hit shelves this summer at hundreds of grocery stores including Erewhon Market, New Seasons, Festival Skogens, Market of Choice, online at GTFO, and at all PLNT Burger chain locations on the East Coast this September. Customers can also receive samples of the product by backing AKUA’s equity crowdfunding campaign, which runs through mid-August on Republic.
