Van’s GF Waffles Recalled For Accidental Wheat Inclusion

Van’s International has issued an urgent, voluntary recall for certain lots of its Gluten Free Original Waffles as they may contain undeclared wheat, according to a statement from the company issued by the FDA on Monday. Affected products are labeled with Lot Code #UW40193L and have an expiration date of 1/19/2024 with UPC 0 89947 30206 4.

The issue was identified by a consumer who noticed a “wheat-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat.” The Tyson Foods-owned brand said that following an investigation it discovered that a pallet of product intended to carry wheat-containing waffles had mistakenly been packed with “a limited number” of cartons labeled as Van’s Gluten Free Original Waffles.

The products were distributed to retail stores in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina and Washington. In a statement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website, Van’s said, to-date, no allergic reactions or illnesses relative to the recalled product have been reported.

Van’s said it has also implemented steps in its manufacturing process to prevent the issue from happening again as “people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the company said.

The company makes a variety of frozen breakfast products, all of which do not contain dairy, corn or egg. Nearly half of the products made by Van’s are gluten-free certified and are made with a flour blend of brown rice, potato starch, rice and soy. However Van’s also produces a line of wheat-based protein waffles in addition to a multigrain waffle product. Though the company did not specify, it is likely either of those two products were mislabeled as their gluten-free alternative.

Van’s said consumers should dispose of the waffles and noted that they can return them to the store they were purchased for a full refund. No other Van’s products have been impacted by the recall.

The company did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.
