The words “toxicology” and “popsicle” aren’t usually found together, but Dionne Laslo-Baker has managed to fuse her background as a scientist and her desire to give her kids a frozen treat into a new kind of entrepreneurship, one that’s as successful as it is grounded in principle. Her push to build a company that could allow families to enjoy these clean-label frozen treats together is helping to democratize organics, and she boldly made a decision to take the brand out of the frozen aisle – a move that released its products from the cold chain and allowed it to build margins that have investors drooling.
But in order to get on board, those investors are going to have to understand that the same instinct for inclusiveness that brought Laslo-Baker into the business is an operating principle up and down the line at DeeBee’s. It’s not just a B Corp, it’s also a place for employee empowerment: Employees are encouraged to give back through a program called “DreamLauncher” that allows them to bring good work to a cause of their choice, along with resources, time and money. Beyond that, she promotes women and minority entrepreneurs as a mentor and advisor, all while keeping things cool — and tasty.
