Review: Riff ‘Chef-Crafted’ Meal Kits Hit the Right Notes

Riff Chef-Crafted Meal Kits

Riff is a new line of shelf-stable, chef-crafted meal kits created by Eleven Madison Park chef Daniel Humm and CPG veteran Mark Ramadan. Launching nationally at Target, the line includes three varieties: Sesame Ginger Noodles, Spicy Tomato Rigatoni, and Creamy Parmesan Cavatappi. Each box contains 2.5 servings and promises restaurant-level flavor in less than 20 minutes. The concept is built around enjoying the products as prepared or using the suggestions on the package to “riff” on them with additional ingredients.

Across the three varieties, Riff delivers strong flavor, easy preparation, and an appealing mainstream presentation that feels a step above the typical boxed pasta meal.

Things that stand out:

  • The flavor is notably more developed and intense than what you’ll typically get from a shelf-stable boxed pasta product. Creamy Parmesan Cavatappi is essentially an elevated take on mac and cheese, Spicy Tomato Rigatoni delivers a familiar tomato and spice profile, and Sesame Ginger Noodles offers a savory Asian-inspired flavor with a pleasant zing.
  • Preparation is straightforward: cook the pasta, prepare the included sauce (from a packet, requiring water, butter, milk or oil depending on the variety), combining the two, and finishing with a crunchy topping. The entire process fits comfortably within the advertised 20-minute window.
  • The “riff” concept gives the product a useful point of distinction. Suggestions involving herbs, vegetables, acid, or other fresh ingredients provide an easy roadmap for turning the base product into something that feels considerably more complete.
  • The packaging has a clean, polished, slightly nostalgic aesthetic that feels established rather than overly trendy. Large Riff branding, colorful food photography, and simple color cues for each SKU give the line solid shelf presence and make the varieties easy to distinguish.
  • We like the understated treatment of the chef connection. Rather than putting Daniel Humm’s name or face front and center, the packaging simply calls out “chef-crafted meal kit,” allowing the product itself to remain the focus.
  • Calling out protein per serving on the front panel is a smart addition, with the three varieties offering 8 to 10 grams. It adds a functional cue without trying to position these as something they are not.

Things to consider:

  • Straight out of the box, we are not sure these quite achieve the promised “restaurant-level flavor.” They are very good for the format, but the suggested riffs, especially the addition of fresh herbs, vegetables, or acid, are probably what will push them closer to that positioning.
  • The broader boxed pasta and meal-kit category is already crowded, so Riff will need to make its chef-driven positioning and customization concept resonate with consumers. Fortunately, the quality of the flavors and approachable branding give it a credible foundation.
