SPINS Acquires Datasembly to Provide Pricing and Promotional Intelligence

Data intelligence provider SPINS announced today the acquisition of Datasembly, a retail data platform focused on hyperlocal, real-time pricing and promotion analytics. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
According to SPINS CEO Jay Margolis, the transaction addresses a “critical blind spot” in CPG intelligence: the lack of consistent access to store-level pricing data across markets and categories. The acquisition of Datasembly will enable SPINS to provide CPG brands, retailers and partners with “the mission-critical insights they need to operate, innovate and grow.”
Founded in 2014 by Daniel Gallagher and Ben Reich, Datasembly delivers over 12 billion product observations per week and has collected more than 1.8 trillion observations to date. The Virginia-based company offers access to product pricing, promotion and assortment records across 150,000 stores and over 200 retailers across 30,000 zip codes.
Additionally, the company maps products even if UPCs aren’t available and links private-label products in a variety of ways.
“Datasembly was founded on the belief that complete, transparent access to pricing data could transform how brands and retailers operate. Joining forces with SPINS allows us to expand that mission and bring our real-time capabilities to an even broader set of partners,” said Reich in a press release.
The deal marks SPINS’ second acquisition in two months as it works to deliver deeper, more actionable insights. In May, the company acquired Lucky Labs to strengthen its capabilities in the beauty and wellness spaces. Lucky Labs uses first-party retail data to provide shopper conversion insights.
“Our mission has always been to accelerate the growth of values-led brands, equipping them with the intelligence and tools needed to deeply understand the consumer. With Lucky Labs, we’re taking the next step – helping our partners […] reach them in the moments that matter most,” said Margolis in a statement.
