Daily Briefing (Insiders Only): Quick Bites For Newtopia Now

The second annual Newtopia Now opens its exhibit halls today in Denver. Here’s a taste of what’s in store.
First things first. If you missed the inaugural event, think of this trade show as a much smaller, more intimate counterpart to Natural Products Expo West. Exhibitors last year told me how much they appreciated the relaxed pace and extended interactions with retail buyers, investors and other key attendees.
Who exhibits? Several hundred companies ranging from early-stage startups to established brands across food and beverage, health and beauty, vitamins and supplements and home and pet care.
As I scanned the floorplan ahead of the show, a handful of brands and new products jumped out – including a few surprises.
The not-so-surprising stuff: Expect even more protein in an array of applications, from pasta sauce to ground coffee to pizza crust. Cookies packed with whey protein, peanut butter blended with soy protein, and pork rind-breaded chicken nuggets are all set to debut.
Additionally, the mounting anti-seed oil movement is influencing new product development, with items on display set to include cold-pressed almond oil and potato chips cooked in beef tallow.
Other trends on my radar: Fermented foods (including brine-soaked jicama sticks), so much granola, and South Asian flavors in unexpected offerings like potato chips and ice cream.
Brands I’m excited to check out include Tots on the Street (gourmet stuffed tater tots), Long Weekend (freeze-dried soup packets) and Rootsy (yuca-based waffles).
