FDA Issues New Calorie-Listing Regulations for Chain Restaurants, C-Stores & More

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in a ruling today that it will require chain establishments with 20 or more locations to list their foods’ caloric information on their menus. These establishments include chain restaurants, movie theaters, grocery and convenience stores, as well as vending machine operators.

The new measures are part of the FDA’s ongoing measure to fight obesity, and while being applauded by some, they are also facing significant scrutiny. Trade associations like the National Association of Convenience Stores and the National Grocers Association have voiced their disapproval of the new regulations, claiming an undue burden on store operators.
