Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: The MAHA Effect

Few public officials have reshaped the conversation around food as quickly as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Since taking over the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Kennedy has turned his “Make America Healthy Again” agenda into one of the most consequential forces affecting the food industry, pushing companies to rethink everything from artificial dyes and additives to ingredient sourcing and product formulation. His administration’s overhaul of the Dietary Guidelines and efforts to tighten oversight of food ingredients have accelerated changes that many manufacturers were already beginning to contemplate, while also intensifying debate over the role of ultraprocessed foods in Americans’ diets. Many scientists and nutrition experts have challenged aspects of Kennedy’s interpretation of the evidence and some of his policy positions, even as others have welcomed greater scrutiny of processed foods and food additives. From multinational food companies to startup brands touting clean labels, Kennedy has fundamentally changed the conversation about what belongs in America’s pantry – and what may not stay there much longer.
