Atlantic Sea Farms Launches Spicy Gochujang Seaweed Salad
BIDDEFORD, Maine— In its continuing effort to boost local coastal economies and improve ocean health through regenerative kelp farming, women-run Atlantic Sea Farms—the American leader in seaweed aquaculture—has launched its newest product, Spicy Gochujang Seaweed Salad.
Available nationally at Whole Foods Market and other retailers, this latest in the company’s lineup of award-winning kelp products comprises small batch blanched and barrel fermented Maine kelp and crunchy daikon radish enlivened by fresh ginger, sesame, and gochujang, the popular Korean fermented chili paste.
Atlantic Sea Farms Spicy Gochujang Seaweed Salad is gluten-free, vegan, and made with kelp that is regeneratively grown and hand harvested by independent fisher-farmers. A versatile product, it’s perfect for salads, stir fries and noodle dishes; great tucked into tacos, pitas, and grain bowls; and a terrific topper for hot dogs and hamburgers. It’s also brilliant alongside grilled or braised meats, fish, and vegetables, and on cheese, meat, and seacuterie boards, and as a satisfying snack straight out of the jar.
Healthwise, seaweed is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. It includes naturally high levels of iodine, antioxidants, potassium, iron and folic acid, and boasts the highest natural concentration of calcium of any food.
Like Atlantic Sea Farms’ milder Fermented Seaweed Salad and best-selling Sea-Chi Kelp Kimchi, Spicy Gochujang Seaweed Salad is a live ferment – packed with probiotics that are considered to improve digestion, strengthen immunity, and improve cognitive function.
It’s also the first product developed by the company’s first-ever in-house chef and Fermentation / R&D Manager, Matt Haight. “Gochujang and kelp make an exciting pairing,” Haight says. “The umami-forward pepper paste brings out seaweed’s natural umami. To complement its earthy sweet heat, we layered in Thai bird chiles and Szechuan peppercorns. The result is a flavor-packed seaweed salad with a zippy, balanced spice that doesn’t overwhelm.”
According to a Global Market Insights Report, the commercial seaweed market is projected to reach $85 billion by 2026.
Carbon negative and hyper-efficient, Atlantic Sea Farms’ domestically cultivated kelp is a regenerative, zero-input aquaculture crop that requires no fertilizer, pesticides, feeds, arable land or fresh water.
“Spicy Gochujang Seaweed Salad satisfies our goal to make climate-hero kelp easy to incorporate into everyday meals,” Atlantic Sea Farms CEO Briana Warner says. “With regenerative kelp, line-grown by our partner fisher-farmers, our products support local farms, enhance ocean health, and offer food enthusiasts and climate-conscious consumers a delicious, climate-friendly, nutrient-dense, plant-based superfood boost. Benefitting planet and people, this speaks to our mantra, ‘good food should do good.’”
Since 2018, Atlantic Sea Farms has removed upwards of 300,000 pounds of carbon from local Maine waters while supporting partner fisher-farmers. “Every product that we get into the hands of consumers helps us improve the world we are living in. We are incredibly proud of what we’ve built,” Warner says.
Spicy Gochujang Seaweed Salad joins Atlantic Sea Farms’ existing suite of award-winning fresh-frozen and fermented kelp products, which have been lauded by the Good Food Foundation, Specialty Food Association, NEXTY and many more.
