The Sofrito Project and Spice Tribe Launch a Collection of Puerto Rican Spice Blends

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.— Spice Tribe, an heirloom spice purveyor based in San Francisco, and Chef Gascón-López, founder of The Sofrito Project, partner to create three unique spice blends that are an homage to her rich and diverse multicultural background that is a blend of her Afro-Caribbean, Latin, and Southern upbringing. The Sofrito Project spice collection includes three distinct spice blends: Sofrito, a flavorful, aromatic blend that is the backbone of many Puerto Rican dishes; Smoky Sazón, a smoky high-impact Latin seasoning; and Black Garlic Adobo, a bold, all-purpose umami-forward seasoning blend. This spice collection is available exclusively online for $27.99, starting Sept. 15.
“My intention behind creating these blends was to simply share my beautiful culture with others,” states Chef Reina Gascón-López, founder of The Sofrito Project. “Cooking and sharing my food is something that’s been passed to me from both of my grandmothers and mother. And since cooking plays such a huge role in Puerto Rican culture, I want to share with others the diverse flavors that are the true root of our dishes,” she goes on to say.
In 2017, Reina Gascón-López started The Sofrito Project, a website dedicated to sharing her love of cooking, where she explores both her multiracial background and cultures through her recipes and writing. As a Puerto Rican–Southerner, she is known for cooking elevated homestyle and comfort foods that are approachable and flavorful, with a flair for Puerto Rican tradition.
“As a travel-inspired spice company, Spice Tribe understands the powerful and transportive nature of flavors and aromas,” states Trent Blodgett, chef and owner of Spice Tribe. “It’s exciting to work with chefs like Reina and to see how they distill complex flavors into easy-to-use seasoning blends that invite home chefs on a flavorful journey that’s steeped in culture and family tradition,” he goes on to say.
