Algae Cooking Club Scales Quickly, Drops Price Amid Rising Costs of Olive Oil As Interest In Algae Culinary Oil Soars
Algae Cooking Club (ACC), the premium, all-purpose neutral oil made from microalgae, announces a significant price reduction after reaching scale milestones sooner than expected as consumer and retailer interest grows rapidly. Algae Cooking Club’s retail price will drop from $25.00 to below $20.00, a 20% decrease in just five months since the brand launched. ACC is now in over 150 retail stores and has experienced 50% month-over-month sales growth. It’s a sign that algae is becoming a widely adopted culinary ingredient, and it paves a path for a new, more efficient food system to emerge as other commodity prices skyrocket.
Due to climate change, many industrial agriculture food systems are showing signs of fatigue. The world’s biggest exporter of olive oil, Spain, has halved its production due to five consecutive years of drought and extreme heat, increasing its price by 112% since 2022. Figures from market analysts show a record high of $9.94 USD per kilogram in 2024. Algae Cooking Club has found a solution to source a pantry staple that uses only one-tenth of the land and water and has roughly half the carbon footprint of many traditional oils.
Leveraging the efficiency of fermentation, Algae Cooking Club offers an oil that’s pure, high quality and incredibly good for both people and the planet. It’s similar to fermenting wine but for cooking oil. This method slashes the carbon footprint and results in an oil with the highest composition of good omega-9 fatty acids (93%), high smoke point (535 degrees fahrenheit) and a neutral, slightly buttery flavor that amplifies flavors. It takes only a few days to produce and addresses concerns about ongoing price hikes.
“This is all thanks to our early fans and customers, the more popular the ingredient becomes the more we can drive prices down. We started Algae Cooking Club hoping we could bring prices down over a matter of years as we scaled. To be able to do this in a matter of months is proof food curiosity is alive and well. It comes at a time when we need new, efficient ways to source high-quality ingredients, and algae is one of those ways. We still have work to do, but the progress is exciting,” said Kasra Saidi, co-founder of Algae Cooking Club.
The company will begin expanding beyond independent retailers and foray into larger national retailers later this year. Since its launch in February 2024, Algae Cooking Club has quickly gained acclaim as a culinary favorite, endorsed by renowned chefs like Daniel Humm and Sophia Roe. The company's unwavering commitment to high-quality, low-impact ingredients is setting new industry standards, positioning algae oil as an high-quality, chef-worthy, kitchen staple.
