Zohran Mamdani: Citizen Shopping Cart

In the scope of the entire New York City economy, the development of five city-owned grocery stores that supply lower-cost groceries to residents isn’t a huge line item, but it’s one that has massive symbolic value for Mayor Mamdani. His plan is to open affordable grocery stores in all five boroughs by the end of his first term — East Harlem’s La Marqueta will be the first location — but after that comes the hard part: establishing supply chain and labor economics to make the stores run profitably (or at least efficiently and without too much of a loss). If it works, Mamdani might lead the charge in changing household economics for many New Yorkers, and potentially city dwellers nationwide. But the whole enterprise will be under the world’s most powerful microscope: the New York media, meaning that if it fails, it could put his entire term in the soon-to-expire aisle.
