A Natural Shift? Sprouts Posts Sales Surge As Natural Products Go Mainstream

Over here at Nosh, our name originally stood for Natural, Organic, Sustainable and Healthy. But a few years ago, we started to see how the natural products industry was becoming enmeshed in the landscape of the food industry broadly. We could no longer curb our coverage to a niche within the food industry, and so, we widened our focus (and lower-cased our name).

The consumer no longer fits cleanly into a cart of nuts, seeds, tofu and almond milk. Those products – once a hallmark of the “crunchy granola” shopper – were seeping into all types of stores from conventional to mass and even club and convenience. Look no further than the rapid rise of the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement to see just how mainstream conversations about “healthy food” have become.

That momentum isn’t going anywhere either. It’s already rewriting the formulations of Big Food conglomerates – from their ingredient lists to how they think about their brand platforms. The shift in consumer habits has caused pressure to mount, and quite a few are, or thinking about, breaking up their business segments to better meet modern needs.

And for the retailers – they are cashing in. On earnings calls this year, Walmart has repeatedly emphasized how its grocery segment has become one of its largest growth drivers. Reminder: that is coming from a mass retailer that boasts an inventory assortment of over 75 million unique products, and is considered the largest vendor of organic food in the U.S.

As the venues for natural food buying have shape shifted, natural chain Sprouts Farmers Market has emerged as a key player, filling a retail void for early-stage, innovative brands that once would have looked to Whole Foods as a launchpad (prior to transformation under new owner Amazon).

  • This week, Sprouts posted a Q2 net sales gain of 17% YoY this week as comparable store sales growth clocked in at 10.2%.
  • The natural chain is expanding rapidly, too, with 12 new store openings in Q2 alone, bringing its total count to 455 locations across 24 states.
  • That’s a notable acceleration since Q2 2024 when net sales rose 12% YoY, comparable store sales were up 6.7% and new store openings stood at five for the quarter.

The company’s Innovation Set has given plenty of startup brands their first retail break. But Sprouts isn’t just championing emerging and innovative indie companies; it’s also playing the same game as large grocers and leaning deeper into differentiated private label products.

Its store brand segment contributed 24% of total sales during the quarter, and the retailer said it plans to launch 350 new items under that arm with attribute-led offerings focused on seed oil-free, vegetarian and vegan items, among others.

“We’re pushing very hard on our Sprouts brand,” said CEO Jack Sinclair on a call with analysts. “We think [our store brand] gives us a little bit more of a moat in terms of linking to what the competition might or might not do. We watch them and clearly our sector’s health-focused, innovative, attribute-based products are going to be more important in the future… We think we’re at the leading edge of that.”
