Global Olive Oil Industry Leader Presents its First Integrated Sustainability Report
Bertolli Broadens Frontiers with Line of Sustainable Products in the U.S.
Dallas, TEXAS (May 15, 2024) -- Deoleo, the world's number one olive oil company and producer of popular Olive Oil US brands Bertolli and Carapelli, presents its first Integrated Sustainability Report, highlighting the different environmental, social, and governance actions (ESG) and milestones achieved in the last year according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards.
The new independently verified report along with the company’s silver medal awarded by EcoVadis this year, demonstrates Deoleo’s ESG strategy and defined action plan are making an impact. Marked by a clear purpose – ‘caring for what cares for you’ – Deoleo demonstrates its approach is delivering on that purpose. ESG highlights from the report include:
- No Gender Pay Gap: The company has closed the gender pay gap for its workforce and employs over 625 people in 12 different countries including the US and Canada.
- ≈⅓ Sustainable Olive Oil: In 2023, 27.7% of extra virgin olive oil purchased was certified by an independent third party under Deoleo’s Sustainability Protocol, the industry’s first such protocol used to certify farms and mills through training and resources in support of sustainable olive oil production.
- Increase in 100% rPET Packaging: Deoleo increased the number of its products, including Bertolli skus, that are packaged in 100% rPET bottles by 7.4% in 2023. Also by optimizing PET bottle weights, the company reduced material consumption by 187 tons annually.
US consumers can experience the benefits of Deoleo’s sustainability efforts firsthand in the US market through the sustainably sourced extra virgin olive oil SKUs which were launched last year in the Carapelli and Bertolli brands—Carapelli Original Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Bertolli Sustainably Sourced, respectively.
“Despite the complex challenges facing the olive oil industry currently, as the global leader in olive oil, it is our responsibility to be the stewards of an essential product in the Mediterranean diet,” shares Thierry Moyroud, CEO of Deoleo North America. “Our commitment to ‘Caring for what cares for you’ clearly underscores our objective: to deliver the benefits of the Mediterranean diet to the entire world, while ensuring sustainability underpins all our actions.”
Over the last year, the olive industry has faced significant challenges due to climate change and drought, reducing the availability of olive oil worldwide. These environmental factors underscore the importance for industry leaders such as Deoleo to flexibly adapt to dynamic industry challenges without compromising their strong commitment to sustainable practices.
"Our new Integrated Report reflects the progress we are making in ESG focus areas with the mills, with our employees and with our clients,” emphasizes Maca Garau Sobron, VP of Marketing Deoleo USA. “We have achieved a lot in the past and believe we have a promising future on the horizon. However, we are convinced that the only viable future of industry is a sustainable one.”
As a company committed to sustainability, transparency, and its relationship with the environment, Deoleo’s 2023 Integrated Sustainability Report highlights the company’s commitment to deliver a more responsible future in the olive oil sector.
