Overview

Taste of Immokalee (A Student Enterprise) Last year sixteen high achieving teenagers from Immokalee took time from their busy schedules to volunteer as leaders in an innovative program that gave them a chance to serve and create. They served by organizing food packaging events with Meals of Hope, then discerning what impact the food had on the cultural and nutritional needs of the community, created four new food products using the vegetables and fruits of the area to start a new food line, “Taste of Immokalee”, to promote their community’s contribution to the food chain and help sustain future outreach to those in need. They searched inward from their families’ experience in the fields and used home recipes to create the Fire Roasted Tomato and Jalapeño Salsa, the I-Town Burger, the Saborsito Sensacional Spice, and the Sunny Home Cookies that would appeal to their peers and anyone interested in the unique diversity of Immokalee. They created packages and labels and added their personal stories to the products. By the end of the school year, they launched their products to the local Chamber of Commerce and area Rotary Clubs and used the feedback to improve their marketing capacity over the summer. Aspiring for a chance at college was the overarching goal of all the participants but finding a way to give back to their families and community was their passion. The project gave the high school students the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the cultural and economic development of the area while adding to the value of their academic education by empowering them with outside the classroom experiences and skills in “real world’ issues. The activities of the project gave high school and college students effective meaning to their project title, which was called “Giving Back”, now officially, Taste of Immokalee. Thanks to the State Farm Youth Advisory Board for their faith in the Immokalee students. This unique service learning granting organization consisting of college leaders from around the country funded the Giving Back project for last school year. We hope to engage YOU to become part of the continuous effort to give back to our community!
