Position Mission:

Successfully guide the growth of Melvin Brewing Company through effective and consistent leadership. Use a continuous improvement approach to brewing and leadership at the Melvin production facility and maintain a keen focus on profitability-driving initiatives for the organization.  

Overview:

This position is critical to the success of Melvin Brewing Company. As Head Brewer, you are responsible for leading the Alpine brewing and cellaring team with effective, high-level communication across organizational channels. This includes scheduling for success, managing COGS ordering, recipe development and brewing execution, including test batches on the pilot system. This position will work closely with the Brewmaster, Production Manager, and Quality Assurance Manager. This position should exhibit and support a high-performance work ethic and maintain a culture of accountability and transparency in leadership.  

Key Results:  

1. Brewery Management:  

a. Lead and manage the Alpine brewing team and processes.  

b. Supervise brewing production from start to finish and create and manage operations schedules.  

c. Stay within budget spend in $ / BBL for products produced and for expenses spent.  

d. Work closely with raw material suppliers on forecasting and utilization schedules.  

e. Continually focus on brewing process improvements and beer quality improvements.  

f. Manage any equipment, staffing or operational issues that arise.  

2. Staff Management:  

a. Lead a brewing staff capable of meeting / exceeding goals in Alpine.  

b. Model staffing needs as output increases.  

c. Manage inventory turnover for as close to JIT manufacturing as is reasonable.  

d. Forecast COGS needs (grain, hops, printed cans, glass, etc.) to be approved by Brewmaster.  

e. Forecast labor and schedule team according to production need, including PM days and equipment maintenance.  

3. Brewing Operations:  

a. Organize brew schedules against sales demands with PARs held in tanks.  

b. Lead the brew team with continuous improvement and efficiency in mind.  

c. Work with Brewmaster to manage recipes for Lazy Dog (core brands) and seasonal beer releases.  

d. Work with the Quality Assurance Manager to ensure the highest quality product and to mitigate any product quality issues that arise in the brewery or in the market.  

e. Cover weekly production brewing shifts as needed to maintain proficiency and expertise in the production brewhouse.  

f. Perform cellar tasks weekly to maintain proficiency in cellar operations.  

4. Administrative:  

a. Weekly update reports submitted by EOD each Monday to Brewmaster.  

b. Monthly brewing and safety meetings held or attended.  

5. Culture:  

a. Support a culture of trust, respect and openness.  

b. Work with the leadership team to make Melvin / Pure Madness an employer of choice. Requirements: 

1. Physical Requirements:  

a. Ability to lift and move 55+ pounds repeatedly.  

b. Ability to stand for extended periods.  

c. Ability to work in hot, cold, and wet environments. 

d. Ability to bend, stoop, and climb.  

2. Technical Skills:  

a. Knowledge of brewing equipment operation and maintenance.  

b. Proficiency in cleaning and sanitizing brewing equipment.  

c. Understanding yeast handling and fermentation management.  

d. Ability to perform quality control checks and maintain accurate records.  

e. Knowledge of CIP procedures.
