Cedar’s Foods Donates $100,000 to Essex County Habitat for Humanity to Support Affordable Housing in Haverhill
Haverhill, MA (June 23, 2025) — Cedar’s Foods, a long-standing member of the Haverhill community, has donated $100,000 to Essex County Habitat for Humanity to support the purchase of property for the construction of seven affordable homes in Haverhill. The project on 512 Washington Street will expand the supply of affordable housing in Haverhill, where it is desperately needed.
Aimee Tsakirellis, Cedar’s Foods Executive Vice President of marketing says, “At Cedar’s, we’re proud to give back to the Haverhill community that has supported us for so many years. This initiative with Habitat for Humanity is especially meaningful, as it helps create stable, affordable housing for local families. Giving back to our community is at the heart of everything we do.”
The contribution will play a vital role in expanding access to homeownership for low-income families in the area, particularly as the housing crisis continues to worsen across Massachusetts.
As Pati Fernandez, Haverhill resident and Habitat Family Selection Committee Co-Chair, explained, “the average single-family home price has reached $900,000 in Greater Boston, making homeownership even more out of reach for low-income families who often hold down two jobs while trying to raise a family. People are leaving Massachusetts because they can’t afford to live here,” said Fernandez.
“When you’re making minimum wage, paying rent versus an affordable mortgage makes a huge difference. We’re creating an opportunity to give someone their independence and partner with them in a dignified way to keep them in our community,” she added.
Cedar’s donation helps kick off the fundraising for this transformative project, which aligns with Essex County Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build and repair homes in partnership with families in need. The organization uses a model in which selected homeowners contribute at least 240 hours of “sweat equity” to help build their homes and repay an affordable 30-year mortgage.
