Community Food Co-op

POSITION SUMMARY–Store Managers oversee all areas of store operations, supervise the retail department managers, and ensure that our stores are clean, well-stocked, and well-staffed to provide a great shopping experience for member/shoppers. Store managers sit on the Co-op’s Senior Management Team.

General Responsibilities for Store Managers

Operations

  • Responsible for the overall supervision and direction of all staff engaged in retail store operations.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision to retail Department Managers.
  • Ensure that the store is clean, well-stocked, and ready-for-business at opening and that excellent store conditioning is maintained during all open hours.
  • Ensure that adequate staff is on hand to meet the daily operational needs of retail operations.
  • Ensure that staff provide prompt, friendly, knowledgeable customer service
  • Ensure that replenishment ordering systems that minimize out-of-stocks are in place for all departments
  • Ensure that inventory is managed efficiently in all departments to meet inventory management goals.
  • Ensure that all stock level requirements, signage, and other requirements for WIC or other federal or state programs the Co-op participates in are met.
  • Provide immediate feedback to staff when needed to maintain good customer service and productivity.
  • Promote cross-team problem solving and cooperation.
  • Ensure that department managers are familiar with and have access to timely financial and operating information.
  • Provide problem solving support to Department Managers.

    Central Office Programs

  • Ensure that Department Managers and store staff are well informed about marketing, merchandising, and other central office programs and plans.
  • Ensure that sufficient department and store resources are allocated to the planning and implementation of marketing, merchandising, and other central office programs.
  • Ensure that central office programs are implemented within agreed upon timelines.
  • Ensure that accommodations for staff or other actions required by L&I claim administration, the ADA or other workplace regulations or laws are understood and adhered to by Department Managers.

    Facilities, Equipment, and Safety

  • Ensure that all retail departments comply with all food safety regulations and follow safe food handling procedures at all times.
  • Ensure that the facilities and all retail and work areas are free of hazards that would compromise the safety of customers and staff
  • Ensure that readily available information for dealing with emergencies is up to date and available to staff.
  • Ensure that the store has a safety committee representative at quarterly safety committee meetings.
  • Work with Facilities as needed to ensure that equipment or facilities problems are addressed in a timely way.
  • Work with facilities or contractors as needed to minimize the impact of equipment installation or maintenance and building remodels or repairs on operations and member/shoppers.
  • Facilitate communication related to equipment installation or maintenance and building remodels or repairs to ensure that Department Managers and store staff are well informed.
  • Perform an annual facilities and equipment needs assessment to inform the annual capital budgeting process.

    Personnel and Training

  • Ensure that all departments have comprehensive training practices in place for new staff.
  • Ensure that all staff receive thorough training in department operations.
  • Ensure that department managers accommodate trainings or orientations needed for new staff members.
  • Ensure that all staff members comply with Co-op personnel policies.
  • Ensure that personnel policies are applied equitably to all staff.
  • Ensure that performance problems are addressed in a timely and constructive way.
  • Ensure that all retail Department Managers receive regular, timely feedback on performance.
  • Ensure that retail Department Managers have the training and resources necessary to fulfill their job responsibilities.
  • Provide consultation, coaching, and problem solving support to retail Department Managers in all areas of their jobs.
  • Work with HR manager to identify professional development opportunities for Department Managers.
  • Ensure that department managers engage in the annual team evaluation process.
  • Ensure that accommodations for staff or other actions required by L&I claim administration, the ADA or other workplace regulations or laws are understood and adhered to by Department Managers.

    Management Team

  • Engage in big-picture thinking to support the development of policies, programs, and procedures to achieve the goals of the Co-op’s strategic plan.
  • Participate in the development of the annual business plan.
  • Work with the GM to develop 1-3 year labor forecast, operating, and capital spending plans.
  • Participate in policy development for the Co-op.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of management team discussions.
  • Encourage an open communication staff right to give their opinion and is open and receptive to different perspectives.
  • Treat all Co-op staff with consistency and fairness, in a style appropriate to a cooperative work environment.
  • Models good member relations behavior by being open to members input and valuing their perspective.
  • Attend Board/Management retreats as required.

    Other Duties

  • Maintains the stability and reputation of the store by complying with legal requirements.
  • Familiar with and able to explain membership system simply, efficiently and completely.
  • Keeps GM informed of any problems and/or ideas.
  • Maintains a high level of natural foods industry knowledge.
  • Communicates pertinent information to employees.
  • Creates when necessary, amends and/or maintains all systems which enable the store to function efficiently and profitably.
  • Knows and promotes Co-op Principals and Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as directed by the General Manager

Job Requirements& Qualifications

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work closely and cooperatively with others.
  • Strong knowledge of retail concepts and of retail industry.
  • Understanding of natural foods industry including organic and non-GMO products.
  • At least 2 years of experience supervising and managing staff in a retail setting.
  • Ability to simultaneously track and manage a large quantity of detailed information.
  • Ability to track budgets and respond accordingly.
  • Work towards continuous improvement to encourage change; find ways to increase profitability and productivity; and improve processes, products & customer service in all departments.
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively multi-task, including organizational, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and to meet the changing requirements of the job.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision, communicate effectively and work under deadlines.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business; some early mornings, evenings, holiday, and weekend shifts required.

Work Environment:

  • Work includes walking, standing, sitting, computer use, knowledge and proficiency with numbers, when on the floor; kneeling, frequent heavy lifting, repetitive hand and arm movements, bending and reaching.
  • Responsible from time to time for moving and lifting 30 – 50 pounds.
  • May be exposed to various allergens.
